Webster City Police Department alerts residents of scam

May 15, 2019

The Webster City Police Department has learned of a scam that the community needs to be aware of.  This particular scam involves a subject calling and identifying themselves as an officer with the Webster City Police Department.  The caller was told that they could not consult a third party and needed to provide them with credit card and bank account information.  The caller threatened to have the subject arrested if they did not provide the information.

Particularly troubling was that the call came from a number identified on Caller ID as the “Webster City Police Department 515-832-9166.”  This is a common tactic that scammers are using to take advantage of people.  By “spoofing” a phone number, the caller can identify themselves as anyone.

The Webster City Police Department does not operate in this manner.  You will NOT receive a legitimate call from anyone associated with the Department asking for bank information or credit card information.  If you are in doubt as to the legitimacy of the call, hang up and call the police department.

“People have worked hard for their financial security, to see criminals representing themselves as police officers and taking advantage of people makes me sick.” Chief Mork said.  “Do not fall for their scams, whenever you are in doubt, call to confirm.  In addition, make sure your family members are aware of this scam so they do not to fall victim.”
