When do I need a building permit?

Generally, permits are required any time you erect a new building, alter, enlarge or demolish an existing building or make a change to an existing building that affects its structural characteristics.

What size building requires a building permit?

Anything 120 sq. ft. or larger.

What is the maximum area I can take up in the backyard with a building?

Detached accessory buildings, other than private garages, within a rear yard may not occupy more than one-third (1/3) of such area and shall not be more than twelve (12) feet in height.

Do I need a permit to build/install a fence?

Yes, a zoning permit is required.

Do I need a permit for a pool?

Yes, a zoning permit is required.

Is a permit required to re-roof my house, and how many layers of roofing can I have?

Yes, a permit is required. A maximum of two layers of shingles may be on a roof. If there are already two layers on the roof, they must be torn off before a new layer can be put on.
