The City Council of Webster City agreed to an ordinance Monday that would vacate a portion of Third Street right-of-way west of Fair Avenue, taking a possible new west end Kwik Star store closer to reality.
The council passed the second reading of the ordinance at its Monday meeting, then waived the third required reading and voted to adopt the ordinance.
The council also set October 16 at 6:05 p.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on a proposal to dispose of city-owned right-of-way on Third Street lying west of Fair Avenue to further help implement the potential store site.
Kwik Star is seeking to establish a greater presence in Webster City, according to Travis Small, the firm’s real estate manager for this part of Iowa.
“We look forward to having a second store in Webster City,” he told the City Council of Webster City at its meeting September 18, when the council passed the first reading.
The proposed store would be on the city’s west end.
Kwik Star already has a store on Fair Meadow Drive near the south entrance of Webster City.
“We’re glad to be here,” Small told the council at the September meeting.
Ariel Bertran, Webster City’s Community Development director, said the city was approached by a developer regarding the proposed development, adding that the vacation of the right of way has been recommended by the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission at its September 11 meeting.
Small did not give a time frame for the project.
A representative in the corporate real estate office of Kwik Trip-Kwik Star declined to comment about the project.
The development, according to the September 18 council packet, would be located at 505 Fair Ave., Webster City.
The formal request for the vacation of Third Street west of Fair Avenue states the development would be located at the northeast corner of Overpass Drive and Fair Avenue.
“The vacation request would allow the developer to design their site as needed with the other parcels that they are acquiring adjacent to the right-of-way,” a council memo in the packet states.
“The vacation would also allow for the relocation of associated utilities.”
