The extensive Second Street construction project is nearing completion and should reopen to travel within the next couple of weeks, according to a report given to the City Council of Webster City Monday night.
Public Works Director Ken Wetzler said there is currently one approach to an alley that has yet to be laid down on the project.
“Otherwise, all of the concrete has been poured,” he said. “We’ve gone past the window for seeding so we’ll have to do dormant seeding which will probably have to be touched up in the spring.”
He said he hopes the street will open prior to Nov. 1, but that date will be dependent upon the weather.
“Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we’ll make that happen,” he said.
A detour route took motorists down First Street or Third Street to access businesses along the construction area. Recently, the city has opened several of the cross streets along the roadway, making it much easier to access stores and restaurants along Second Street.
The main thoroughfare through the community, Second Street closed for construction in late March. The first phase of the $3.7 million project included sewer, water and storm drainage replacement with a new concrete road surface, curbs, new sidewalks and street lights.
The 2021 Second Street reconstruction project would begin Dec. 21 with the public hearing. Contracts for the project would then be awarded in February.
“We need to start getting temporary easements and also need to start getting contracts ready for tree removal in the second phase,” he said.
