A Des Moines developer plans to build up to 45 houses in Webster City in what’s apparently one of the largest residential development deals in the community’s recent history.
”It’s the biggest thing that I know of since I’ve been here,” Mayor John Hawkins said Monday evening.
On Monday, the City Council unanimously voted to sell the 45 lots in the Brewer Creek Estates neighborhood to J. Larson Homes, of Des Moines, for $1,094,000.
”This is something we’ve been looking for since I’ve been on the council,” Councilman Logan Welch said.
”I appreciate you coming here and seeing the opportunity here,” he said to John Larson, of the home building company.
The Brewer Creek Estates neighborhood is on the city’s south side, near U.S. Highway 20. Many of the lots the company is buying are on Crestview Drive. Others are on Lewis, Kamen, New Castle, North Terrace and Fairmeadow drives.
Under the purchase agreement approved by the council Monday, the company must have all construction done by Dec. 21, 2021.
Hawkins said if the work isn’t done on time, the company will forfeit the land and the money it paid for the land.
In response to a question from Councilman Jim Talbot, Larson said a mixture of local contractors and contractors from out of town will be used.
”We’ll try to keep it local as much as we can,” he said.
