The Dubuque Street Bridge in Webster City will receive extensive repairs as a result of a contract awarded Monday by the City Council.
Public Works Director Ken Wetzler said the bridge will be closed completely while the work is under way.
But exactly when that work will begin remained unclear as of Monday night’s council meeting. Wetzler said the chosen contractor, Peterson Contractors Inc., of Reinbeck, has two options. The company, he said, can start immediately and be done by Nov. 30, or it can start April 1, 2019, and by done by May 24, 2019. He told the council he was not sure which option the company will pick.
The company will be paid $286,790.55 to repair the bridge’s abutments, deck, sidewalks, expansion joints, deck drains and approaches.
The council voted unanimously to award the contract.
Other bidders for the job were Minturn Inc., Brooklyn, $358,373.80; Cramer and Associates, Grimes, $370,643.90; Jasper Construction, Newton, $378,711.80; and PCiRoads LLC, St. Michael, Minnesota, $440,075.01.
Also on Monday, the council hired Snyder & Associates, of Ankeny, to prepare plans for the demolition of the former Fuhs Pastry Shop at 605 Second St. The firm will also prepare plans for shoring up adjacent buildings during the demolition job.
Snyder & Associates will be paid $14,718.
The City Council bought the building, which officials say is unsafe, on April 16 with the goal of demolishing it. The building was purchased for $1 from Fuhs Pastry Shop LLC, of Webster City.
The shop closed on Dec. 31, 2014, but there were problems with the structure before that date. The conditions were bad enough that city officials posted signs outside of it in 2013 bearing the words ”Enter at your own risk.”
In an unrelated matter, the council rescheduled a hearing on the potential sale of the former Hamilton Hospital site at 800 Ohio St. The hearing has been set for 5:35 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Municipal Building, 400 Second St.
Prairie Fire Development Group LLC, of Kansas City, Missouri, is offering to buy the 6.47 acre site for $153,000. The company proposes to build 16 duplexes there.
